About the department

The department of Zoology was established on 1955 with General course. Presently, It caters Undergraduate Honours course under CBCS. The strength of the department is that it possesses well-equipped laboratories, smart class-room, specimen museum and seminar library. The department is manned by eight faculty members and two laboratory assistants. Apart from discharging regular curricular activities with utmost care, the department arranges for tutorial classes, class tests, mock tests and provide study materials, model question papers to make the students' competent for University or other competitive examination and build their confidence. Among extracurricular activities, the department arranges students' seminar, science quiz, publication of students' magazine and guide students to attend different competitions outside the colleges. The department encourages students for conducting cultural programmes in the department for various occasion. More than 60 percent of students of this department pursue higher education. Of the others, the students follow career in paramedical, pharmaceutical, administrative or Govt. services and self-employment.

Laboratory

The department has a well equipped Laboratory. It contains sufficient instruments required for Practical curriculum under CBCS syllabus. Laboratory assets of different fine instruments include Laminar air flow, Spectrophotometer, Colorimeter, Autoclave, Centrifuge, Digital balance, Digital pH meter, Trinocular microscope with camera and computer attachment etc. Students get scope to handle microscopes and other equipment (under practical curriculum), individually. The laboratory has a strong specimen museum and models and charts for practical demonstration.

Future Prospects for Students: Zoology is a core subject. This subject has multifaceted prospects in academics, service and self-employment. For academics, students after completing their graduation can pursue post-graduation in Zoology or any allied subjects. After post-graduation, students can continue academic career by executing Ph. D and post doctoral research work through any Indian or Foreign university. NET/SET/ GATE is the requisite qualifications for higher degree in India and for foreign universities other tests (for example, GRE/TOFEEL ) are considered as the eligibility criteria . Services such as faculty member in colleges/ universities/ academic institutes or research assistants/ scientists / project managers in research/ human resource development wings of different institutions are the some of the placement scopes .The students can also undertake professional courses such as paramedical, pharmacy, medical lab technicians, nursing, physiotherapy, wild life photography, wild life tourist guide etc. and in different applied fields of zoology ( for example, fisheries, apicultures lac culture, animal husbandry, poultry etc) for service / self-employment and can also choose career in some other courses such as MBA. For service, students with this course are eligible for various Govt/ Administrative services ( SSC, UPSC, Bank, Civil services , School services etc).
